Document 32735 LOU HENRY HOOVER Returning from a trip to the Sierras, she writes to a friend. TLS: "Lou Henry Hoover", 1p, 5½x8½. Stanford University, California, 1937 September 22. The former First Lady writes to Mrs. Requa. In full: "So many times during these past months I have thought of you, and hoped that you were getting adjusted to the new life and finding the world still interesting,-and that the children and grandchildren were restoring your courage. Except for one little glimpse of Lawrence, I have not seen the children, as I have been away on long trips, one up into the northern mountains, and one into the Sierras. I was greatly distressed to learn of the death of your sister's husband. What tragedies to come to you both in the same year. Hoping that you are having a very interesting trip." Mrs. Hoover encouraged physical fitness and enjoyed trips into the mountains. She was leader of Troop 7 of the Girl Scouts, later serving as the organization's National President. Mrs. Hoover was nicknamed "Buffalo" by her troop as she encouraged physical exercise. In 1922, she was the only female officer of the National Amateur Athletic Federation. When the Hoovers lived in the White House, their summer retreat was in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When they left Washington in 1933, they turned their mountain home over to the government for use by the Girl and Boy Scouts. Lightly creased at upper and lower blank margins. Overall, fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 32735 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
