Document 17309
ANDREW JOHNSON and JOHN M. SCHOFIELD. Partly Printed DS:
"Andrew Johnson" as President and "J.M. Schofield" as
Secretary of War, 1p, 14¼x17¾. On vellum. Washington, 1868 July 27.
Appointment of Henry W. Smith as First Lieutenant by Brevet in the Army.
Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton had been suspended from office by President
JOHNSON on August 12, 1867. He was reinstated by the U.S. Senate on
January 13, 1868. His removal by Johnson was the immediate cause of the
President's impeachment. On May 26, 1868, President Johnson was acquitted at his
impeachment trial and Secretary of War Stanton was permanently removed. Two days
later, SCHOFIELD became Secretary of War. Fine, blue paper seal at top
left. Military vignettes at top and bottom center. Folds, vertical fold touches
"e" in Schofield. Light wear of vellum at lower half of document, barely visible
head on. Light pencil note (unknown hand) at lower left. Overall, fine
condition.
