BENJAMIN HARRISON. Early ADS: "Benjamin Harrison N.P.", ½p, 7¾x4½. Marion County, Indiana, 1853 October 16. Beneath a statement of an account handwritten by Robert Browning, 20-year-old Notary Public Benjamin Harrison has penned the following: "State of Indiana Marion County. Before me a Notary Public in and for said county personally comes Robert Browning who being duly sworn says that the above is a true statement of the account of Craighead & Browning with Nicholas McCarty dec'd, that the same is justly due & remains wholly unpaid. Subscribed & sworn to this 16 day of October AD 1853. Witness my hand & notarial seal." Signed: "R. Browning". Embossed with his "B. Harrison Notary Public Marion County" seal. At the time, Harrison's father, John S. Harrison, was serving his first term in Congress (1853-1857). His grandfather was President William H. Harrison. Harrison had received his B.A. degree from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1852 and was admitted to the Cincinnati Bar in 1854. Irregular top edge. Folds do not touch signature. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
