BENJAMIN HARRISON. Manuscript LS: "Benj. Harrison", 1p,
4¾x8. Indianapolis, Ind., 1900 April 2. To Julian Hawthorne, Esq., New York.
In full: "I have received your letter of March 27th. It will not be
possible for me to write anything for you or to act as a member of your advisory
committee. My engagements absolutely prevent it." JULIAN HAWTHORNE
(1846-1934) was the son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was an author
and one-time editor of the "New York World". His works include Nathaniel
Hawthorne and His Wife: A Biography. After leaving the White House in 1893,
HARRISON, widowed in 1892, married his late wife's niece, Mary (1896). In
addition to his 45-year-old son Russell and 42-year-old daughter Mary, he had a
three-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, when he wrote this letter. Harrison died 11
months later in 1901 at the age of 67. Soiled, foxed and shaded. Left upper and
lower corners missing. Light show through of mounting remnants at corners on
