Document 262772
CALVIN COOLIDGE. TLS: "Calvin Coolidge" as
President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1927 December 8. To
Honorable John Hays Hammond, Washington. In full: "I want to tell you how
much I appreciate your kind words about my Message to Congress. It is always
pleasant to receive expressions of approval; and you know I value your opinion
very much." U.S. mining engineer, diplomat and philanthropist JOHN HAYS
HAMMOND (1855-1936) was associated with Cecil Rhodes in developing South
Africa's natural resources. On December 6, 1927, President COOLIDGE had
delivered his State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress. He
began, in part: "It is gratifying to report that for the fourth consecutive
year the state of the Union in general is good. We are at peace. The country as
a whole has had a prosperity never exceeded. Wages are at their highest range,
employment is plentiful...Rates of interest for industry, agriculture, and
government have been reduced. Savers and investors are providing capital for new
construction in industry and public works. The purchasing power of agriculture
has increased. If the people maintain that confidence which they are entitled to
have in themselves, in each other, and in America, a comfortable prosperity will
continue...." Fine condition.
