     Document 4657

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. TLS: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as Governor-elect of New York, 1p, 8½x11. Roosevelt & O'Connor, Counselors at Law, New York, 1928 December 28. Four days before his inauguration as Governor, FDR writes to Walter Russell, Esq., President, Society of Arts and Sciences, New York. In full: "I have your letter advising me that you are holding some boxes and tables for my friends for the Westchester County Parkway Dinner on the 24th. I regret that it will be impossible for me to attend, so I shall be glad if you will release these I hope all of you will have a most enjoyable time, as I am sure I would if able to be present." WALTER RUSSELL was President of the Society of Arts and Sciences from 1927-1935. In the 1870s, British philosopher Herbert Spencer predicted that civilization was on a downward trend because culture, beauty and ethical practices were neglected in society. In America, he and friends, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Walt Whitman, Edwin Markham, John Burroughs, Mark Twain and Andrew Carnegie, formed a gathering fostering ethics, calling themselves the Twilight Club as they were meeting at the twilight of the 19th Century. After WWI, Thomas J. Watson, Sr., head of IBM, became inspired by the ideals of the movement, wanting the business world to practice these principles. He offered to pay all expenses necessary for the club activities. Watson, Walter Russell and Edwin Markham decided to stress culture as well as ethics, since culture stems from the arts. This extension of the Twilight Club was known as The Society of Arts and Sciences. During Russell's presidency, the Twilight Club gave medals in recognition of genius in the arts and sciences. With the urging of the Twilight Club, Westchester County's Bronx River Parkway was built, beautifying New York and becoming a model for the rest of the country. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "R". Overall, fine condition.
