Document 15524
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. TLS: "FDR"
as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1944 May 10. To
Honorable Edwin A. Halsey, 3517 Williamsburg Lane, Washington, D.C. In full:
"I am sorry to hear reports that you are somewhat under the weather. This is
just a line to let you know that I am thinking of you. Keep your courage up and
your chin, too. Best of luck." EDWIN A. HALSEY (1881-1945) was 16
when his uncle, Senator John W. Daniel (Democrat-Virginia), got him a job as a
page in the U.S. Senate press gallery. For the next 16 years, he worked in the
press gallery, moving from page to assistant superintendent. During this time he
received honorary appointments as "colonel" on the staffs of two Virginia
governors. For the rest of his life, his friends knew him as "Colonel Halsey".
He became Democratic party secretary in 1929 and was elected Secretary of the
Senate on March 9, 1933, five days after FDR was sworn in as President.
Secretary Halsey was in charge of all Senate records and proceedings. In 1944,
doctors informed Halsey he had a serious heart problem. Nine days after FDR's
fourth inauguration, (January 20, 1945, held in The White House for the first
time) the 63-year-old Halsey died. A shocked Senate convened within hours of his
death to express its sorrow. Ten weeks later, President Roosevelt died at age
63. Lightly foxed. Slightly shaded blank margins from prior mounting.
