Document 13251
FRANKLIN PIERCE. ALS: "Franklin
Pierce", 2p, 5x7¼. Concord, N.H., 1868 October 19. To I.I. McCarter
Esq., "now at Watertown, Mass." In part: "In the brief visit this
morning, cut short by your thoughtful consideration of my feeble state of
health, I neglected to send messages of affectionate remembrance to Gov. Aiken,
Gov. Manning, Gov. Pickins, Gov. Orr and other friends of whom we spoke. Do not
fail to assure them of my warm regards. Especially, will you say to Madam Pusem
and her family (Mrs. I.S.) when you meet them, that my delightful recollections
of our meetings first in Geneva and subsequently at Sorrento, Naples and
elsewhere have not been dimmed by time and terrible changes." The four
Governors mentioned by Pierce were Governors of South Carolina. Most probably
McCarter was from South Carolina and was visiting Watertown. After President
Pierce left office in 1857, he toured Europe where he met Madam Pusem and her
family on numerous occasions. Pierce mentions his "feeble state of health". He
died the following year at 64. Lightly penned but completely legible.
Horizontal folds do not touch signature. Fine condition.
