Document 253381
GERALD R. FORD. TLS: "G. Ford", 1p, 6¼x8½. No place
(probably Rancho Mirage, California as the printed franked envelope indicates
such), 1995 December 6. To Ralph L. Benson, Lexington, Virginia. In
full: "Thank you for your generous and thoughtful letter of November 20,
1995, enclosing a Limited Edition print of General George C. Marshall. I
congratulate you on the excellent portrayal of General Marshall who was a superb
statesman. The Marshall Plan, for the economic restoration of post war Europe,
was critical for the success of the free world in the confrontation with the
Soviet Union and its allies. I have the highest regard for Colin Powell and
would welcome him on the GOP ticket in '96." GENERAL MARSHALL was
Truman's Secretary of State from 1947-1949. GENERAL POWELL decided not to
seek the 1996 or 2000 Republican presidential nomination and has served as
President Bush's Secretary of State since 2001. Type transfer above date. Fine
condition.
