Document 13183 GROVER CLEVELAND. Partly Printed DS: "Grover Cleveland" as Governor of New York and "Daniel S. Lamont" as Private Secretary, 2p, 10½x16. Albany, 1883 July 20. Governor Cleveland notifies Bonnell & Valentine that the State Board of Health, asked by him "to examine into nuisances affecting the security of life and health in Long Island City, and in the Town of Newtown, County of Queens", has found that "the business carried on in and about the locality aforesaid by the persons hereinabove named, to be a nuisance in this, to wit: that offensive gases, vapors and odors, and deleterious matter, are allowed to escape into the atmosphere." CLEVELAND declares the business to be a public nuisance and orders that "within three weeks from and after the service of a copy of this order, proper apparatus be constructed and put in operation for the complete condensation or combustion of all vapors and gases generated in the conduct of said business...." DANIEL S. LAMONT later served in President Cleveland's cabinet as Secretary of War (1893-1897). With an attached 1p, 8x5, manuscript DS attesting that the attached executive order was served upon the Long Island City firm. Folds. Vertical fold touches "S" in Lamont's signature.
