Document 262924
GROVER CLEVELAND. TLS: "Grover Cleveland", 1p, 7¾x5.
Gray Gables, Buzzards Bay, Mass., 1892 August 29. To Miss Wright.
In full: "I have received the four leaf clover which you were good
enough to send me, and I accept it as a manifestation of your enthusiasm in the
Democratic cause." CLEVELAND had been President from 1885-1889 and
had lost his bid for reelection in 1888 to Republican Benjamin Harrison. Two
months before writing this letter, thanking Miss Wright for her omen of good
luck, Cleveland again received the Democratic presidential nomination. He
defeated President Harrison in November and served a second term, 1893-1897.
Grover Cleveland had purchased a summer house on the south side of the Cape Cod
Canal called Gray Gables, where he would come to relax and escape the
pressures of Washington. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing
on the Cape. Cleveland used it as his summer White House. Gray Gables was
destroyed in a 1976 fire. Lightly creased. Vertical folds, 1 touches "C" in
Cleveland. Fine condition.
