Document 3293
HARRY S TRUMAN. TLS: "Harry S Truman" as President,
1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1949 June 28. To Fred J. Schmidt,
1401 Fairfax Trafficway, Building "D", Kansas City, Kansas. In full: "I am
enclosing you copy (sic) of Joe Major's certification from the Adjutant
General of Missouri. It looks very much as if we will have to give him a card.
My records do not show Frederick L. Howard as ever having been in 'D' Battery,
although he may be in the same class as Joe Major - my records don't show that
Joe was ever in the outfit. I'd suggest that you ask the Adjutant General for a
certificate on Frederick L. Howard and maybe that will give you the facts."
D Battery, 1st Battalion, 129th Field Artillery, holds the distinction of
being the only D Battery in the Army. Field artillery batteries normally
have A, B and C batteries. The battery was commanded by Capt. Harry S Truman
during WWI. From 1905-1921 Truman was a Major in the Missouri National Guard
Artillery. Lightly creased. Nailhead-size stain at lower right blank margin.
Overall, fine condition.
