HERBERT HOOVER. Early Photograph signed: "Herbert
Hoover". Sepia, 7¾x10. Three-quarter pose with hands in his pockets. In
1895, 20-year-old Herbert Hoover was graduated from Stanford University with a
degree in geology. With no engineering jobs open, he worked in a California gold
mine ten hours a day at 20¢ an hour. Later that year he was hired by a British
mining company and for the next 18 years traveled around the world as a mining
consultant. After fellow Stanford graduate and geology student Lou Henry married
Herbert Hoover in 1899, she accompanied him on his travels. Ink spread at "ert"
of Herbert. Heavy foxing and light staining at lower half of photo. Pinhead-size
hole at upper blank left margin. Lower left corner missing.
