HERBERT HOOVER. TLS: "Herbert Hoover" as President,
1p, 7x8¾ affixed to a 7¼x9¼ board (two surfaces). The White House, 1932
August 13. To Hon. John Hays Hammond, Gloucester, Massachusetts. In full:
"You are most kind to send me your cordial message, and I appreciate it
deeply." U.S. mining engineer, diplomat and philanthropist JOHN HAYS
HAMMOND (1855-1936) was associated with Cecil Rhodes in developing South
Africa's natural resources and shared a common interest with HOOVER, a
former mining engineer who majored in geology at Stanford. President Hoover,
in the midst of his reelection campaign against Franklin D. Roosevelt, had
celebrated his 58th birthday on August 10th. Pinhead-size mark at lower
right blank margin. Fine condition.
