JOHN Q. ADAMS. Partly Printed DS: "J.Q
Adams" as President, 1p, 15½x9½. On vellum. Washington, 1826
September 1. Countersigned: "Geo: Graham" as Commissioner
of the General Land Office. GRAHAM had served as Madison and Monroe's
Secretary of War ad interim from October 22, 1816 to December 9, 1817. In
part: "Whereas Moses Stanley of Burbon County Kentucky has deposited in
the General Land Office of the United States a certificate of the Register of
the Land Office at Crawfordsville...according to the provisions of the Act of
Congress of the 24th of April 1820 entitled 'An act making further provision for
the sale of the Public Lands'", he is granted 82.13 acres of land. The
Land Act of April 24, 1820 abolished the credit system that enabled settlers to
make deferred payment on their land and reduced the per acre purchase price from
$2 to $1.25 with the entire amount to be paid at the time of purchase. The
smallest purchasable unit of land was fixed at 80 acres. Folds, vertical
fold touches "G" of Graham. Lightly stained at upper margin touching some text.

signatures.
