MILLARD FILLMORE. ALS: "Millard Fillmore/For Fillmore & Haven" with three line postscript signed: "M.F.", 1½p, 7½x10 (front and verso). Buffalo, 1845 July 5. With separate integral leaf addressed by Fillmore to: "John R. Townsend Esq/Prest. of Trust Co./New York city", postmarked Buffalo, N.Y., July 6. Postal markings. In part: "My opinion is that Inner Lot No. 29 is worth 40 dollars per foot on Main st. running through to Washington $3760. And that the 6 acres on outer Lot No. 147 is worth from $300 to $500 pr acre-day $300 1800 making a total of $5560. Our mortgage covers both pieces...The Company holds a mortgage against Richard Reading of Aurora, in this County, in this twenty or rather upon his land, given by James W. Griffin & Sally his wife for $1100 bearing date January 29, 1831. We have a subsequent incumbrance (sic) upon the same property, and understand part of the Griffin mortgage is paid. Will you inform us how much is yet due on it, and also whether the company will assign it to Fillmore & Haven for the amount due...." In a postscript, Fillmore adds: "P.S. After closing my letter I discovered that I mistook the location of the 6 acres. It is more valuable than I appraised. I think it safe to bid for it at least $500 making $2000." Fillmore had served in Congress from 1833-1835 and 1837-1843 when he declined to seek renomination, returning to his law firm. He was the unsuccessful Whig candidate for Governor of New York in 1844. In 1837, Solomon G. Haven had become a partner in the Fillmore & Hall law firm, now Fillmore, Hall & Haven. In 1839, Nathan Hall retired and the firm continued as Fillmore & Haven until January 1, 1848, when Millard Fillmore became New York State Comptroller. Haven served as Whig Mayor of Buffalo from 1846-1847. Letter: Fragile. Folds touch signature. Upper horizontal fold totally separated. 2 inches of upper vertical fold totally separated. The letter is encapsulated holding separations in place. Other folds show partial separations touching text (all intact). Lightly stained touching text. Shaded, nicked edges. The leaf: Worn. Fragile. Shaded folds. Creased rectangular portions of upper blank margins cut away. Nicked lower edge. Two items.
