     Document 31332

MILLARD FILLMORE and THOMAS CORWIN. Partly Printed DS: "Millard Fillmore" as President and "Tho Corwin" as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 18¼x14¾. Washington, 1850 September 2. 2-inch diameter white paper seal affixed with red wax at bottom portion. In part: "Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity, Diligence and Discretion of Turner R. King I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, Do Appoint Him Register of the Land Office for the District of Lands subject to sale at Springfield, in the State of Illinois...during the term of four years from the 27th day of August 1850 unless this Commission be sooner revoked by the President of the United States for the time being...." TURNER R. KING, commissioned during the recess of the Senate to be Register of the Land Office at Springfield, Illinois, was appointed by President Zachary Taylor in a message to the U.S. Senate on May 13, 1850. President Taylor died before King's nomination was consented to by the Senate, and King was reappointed by President Fillmore. His nomination was consented to by the U.S. Senate on August 27, 1850. King served until he was removed by the new President, Democrat Franklin Pierce, in March 1853. Ten years later, President Lincoln named fellow Springfield resident King as Collector of Internal Revenue for the 8th District of Illinois. Illinois became the 21st state in 1818. At the time, only the southern third of the state was settled with a population of 40,000. Settlers began moving to the northern part of Illinois in 1825 when the Erie Canal opened. By 1830, the population had grown to 157,000. THOMAS CORWIN became Fillmore's Secretary of the Treasury on July 23, 1850, two weeks after President Taylor died, serving until Fillmore left office on March 3, 1853. Lightly browned on verso and at edges, chipped at top, left and bottom edges, lightly stained, not affecting signatures. Slight separation at mid vertical fold, touching 5 letters. Horizontal fold touches the top of the "Mll" and the "Fill". Overall, fine condition.
