RUTHERFORD B. HAYES. ALS: "R.B. Hayes", 1p, 5½x8½.
Fremont, Ohio, 1884 February 11. To W.M.F. Round, 65 Bible House,
N.Y. In full: "This will introduce you to my friend, Rev. Dr. A.G.
Byers of Columbus, Ohio. You will find him deeply interesting and with large
experience and information touching, all questions of Prison Reform. I regret
that my Engagements will not allow me to go East this month." Bible House
was the headquarters of the American Bible Society. After leaving the White
House, Hayes served as President of the National Prison Association from 1883
until his death in 1893. In 1883, WILLIAM MARSHALL FITTS ROUND became
Corresponding Secretary of the Prison Association of New York. Two years later,
he helped reorganize the National Prison Association of the United States and
was elected its secretary. After returning from the 1886 International
Penitentiary Congress in Rome, Round helped plan the Burnham Industrial Farm, an
institution for unruly boys near Canaan, New York, now known as the Berkshire
Farm Center and Services for Youth. Lightly creased. File note (unknown
hand) at upper right. Fine condition. With embossed stamped envelope
addressed by Hayes to Round in New York City, postmarked Fremont, Ohio, April
12, 1887. Torn top edge, lightly soiled. Also with a pamphlet "Report of
the Committee on the Removal of the Penitentiary". 23p, 6x8¾. Written for
the "President and Members of the Commercial Club of Nashville", reviewing
prison reform in Tennessee during the 1890s and in its past. Creased. Torn blank
back page. Three items.
