THEODORE ROOSEVELT. Manuscript DS: "Theodore Roosevelt"
as President. 1p, 8x12½. The White House, 1907 January 22.
Matted. In full: "During the absence of the Honorable Leslie M.
Shaw Secretary of the Treasury, the Honorable James B. Reynolds, Assistant
Secretary of the Treasury, is hereby designated to perform the duties of
Secretary of the Treasury." Fine condition. Accompanied by a
9¼x11¾ sepia photo of Roosevelt also matted. Slightly stained and silvered.
Overall, fine condition. SHAW was appointed Secretary of the Treasury on
January 9, 1902. He resigned in January, 1907, to become a banker in New York
City. On January 15, 1907, Roosevelt nominated his Postmaster General,
George B. Cortelyou, to succeed Shaw as Secretary of the Treasury and George
Meyer to succeed Cortelyou in the Post Office Department, both appointments to
take effect on March 4, 1907. JAMES B. REYNOLDS performed the duties of the
Secretary until Cortelyou became Secretary in March. Matted not in the
Gallery of History style: 24x18¼ Two items.
