Document 4721
THEODORE ROOSEVELT. TLS: "Theodore Roosevelt", 1p, 7x10.
Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y., 1916 June 5. To Captain Guy Gaunt,
R[oyal].N[avy]., South Ferry Building, New York City. In full: "I
am very much obliged to you for the photograph of that letter. You may be amused
with the enclosed correspondence between myself and Professor Appleman, and the
President of the college in which he is Professor." ROOSEVELT has
handwritten "Gaunt!" in the salutation. CAPTAIN GUY GAUNT was an
Australian-born officer of the Royal Navy who had been appointed to the post of
British Naval Attaché to the United States in 1914, shortly before the outbreak
of WWI. He was also the senior British Intelligence officer in the United
States. Gaunt was later knighted and rose to the rank of Admiral. Two days after
Roosevelt wrote this letter, the Progressive Party Convention opened in Chicago
and nominated him for President. At the same time, the Republicans, also
meeting in Chicago, nominated Charles Evans Hughes. On June 22, 1916, Roosevelt
declined the nomination and supported Hughes for President. Folds, horizontal
fold touches signature. Paper clip stain at upper left. Slightly soiled.
