Document 4794 WILLIAM H. HARRISON. Manuscript DS: "Wm. H. Harrison" as "aide de camp", 1p, 7½x2½. Greenville, 1795 February 8. In full: "The Quartermaster will issue one Gallon of Whiskey for the use of the Indians." Harrison, 18, entered the Army in 1791 to defend the Western frontier against Indian attacks. He joined his regiment at Fort Washington (near Cincinnati), was appointed Lieutenant and became Aide-de-Camp to General "Mad Anthony" Wayne. On October 7, 1793, under orders from President Washington, Wayne and his legion left Fort Washington and established Fort Greeneville, 80 miles north of Cincinnati. On July 28, 1794, Wayne's legion set out from Greeneville, building a chain of forts as they advanced. On August 20, 1794, at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, General Wayne with 900 men defeated a force of 2000 Indians. In October, Wayne established Fort Wayne (Indiana) and, on November 2, 1794, he returned to Greeneville. Harrison's order was issued six months before the signing of the Treaty of Greeneville, "A treaty peace between the United States of America and the Tribes of Indians" (August 3, 1795). By the treaty, the Ohio lands of many tribes were ceded to the U.S. government. Harrison documents relating to Indians are very desirable. Irregular right edge.
