HELEN WILLS
First great American woman athlete.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Helen Wills Roarke/1981" with self-portrait, 6½x3½. First Day Cover of the 10-cent Tennis Centennial stamped envelope, postmarked Forest Hills, NY, August 31, 1974, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Helen Wills (1905-1998) won Wimbledon in 1927-1930, 1932-1933, 1935 and 1938. She won the U.S. Open in 1923-1925, 1927-1929 and 1931. Wills won the French Open in 1928-1930 and 1932. Born in 1905, Wills married financier Frederick Moody in 1929. They divorced in 1937 and she married film writer and noted polo player Aidan Roark in 1939. Fine condition.
