Document 72789
HELEN KELLER. TLS: "Helen Keller", 1p, 7¼x10¼. Arcan
Ridge, Westport, Connecticut, 1955, August 10. On letterhead of her Arcan
Ridge home to Nancy Hamilton, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. In full:
"Dear Nancy, If you were not such a darling whose under-standing I can depend
upon, I should not have the courage to thank you for your birthday letter and
bless you for the cheery laugh it brought me. It is only now that I have managed
to beat back the tide of work which has pursued me since I re-turned to
Westport. We are glad that you have put the affairs of the film into the
hands of Al Butterfield and Tom Wolf. Please thank them for their warm
greet-ings to me on June the 27th. I received a wonder-ful letter from my friend
Lail Gillies in Cape Town about the film which we will show you next time we see
you. With Polly's and my love, I am, Affectionately your friend".
Lightly creased, signature is damp stained. Paper clip rust stain. Overall, fine
condition. Accompanied by a carbon TLS: "Nancy" in type, 2½p, 8½x11,
to Helen, from Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, 1955 July 18. Lightly
creased, else fine. HELEN KELLER's (1880-1968) life story was the basis
of the movie, The Miracle Worker (1962). Although illness left her blind
and deaf at the age of 19 months, she learned to read, write, speak and became a
public figure and an example of achievement despite her handicaps. Keller's
film biography, Helen Keller in Her Story, produced by playwright NANCY
HAMILTON, won an Oscar for best feature length documentary in 1955, the year of
this letter. Keller's secretary and companion was POLLY THOMSON. With
original envelope, 7½x4, postmarked Westport, Connecticut, 1955, August
11. Addressed in unknown hand (possibly Thomson). Creased and soiled.
